Corona string quartet: string portraits
Description
Another concert by the lovely Corona strings, this time a selection of works inspired by Art and Painting, and an opportunity to hear some less well-known but highly accessible music.
The programme’s centrepiece is a delightful set of ‘Sea Sketches’ by the Welsh composer Grace Williams whose marvellous portrayal of the seas off her native Wales is both dramatic and contemplative. Two sets of ‘Aquarelles’ – the pair of works by Delius arranged by the composer from his own unaccompanied choral partsongs and a flamboyant set of ‘Acuarelas’ by the little-known Spanish composer Lopez-Chavarri will be played alongside Grieg’s ever-popular ‘Holberg Suite’ which rarely fails to delight the listener.
Benjamin Britten’s youthful ‘Two Portraits’ composed at the age of 16, are a real find. The first Portrait is dedicated to his close school friend David Layton and the second includes a gorgeous viola solo which demonstrates Britten’s love of his own instrument.
Tickets are £20 for central seats; £15 for side aisle streets; 10% discount for 4+
